So far, the characters (the prison guard, the psychologist, Choirboy, the Christian grandmother, etc.) are quite credible and evoke much curiosity. In fact, I am equally curious about the “soul” of the psychologist as well as the “soul” of Choirboy. Eager to know how you will tend Choirboy’s dream/nightmare. It is full of powerful images; yet, one telling of the dream does not provide sufficient breadth and depth of possibilities: What is the work or intent of the images? What story are they about to tell?
By the way, regarding the room: would a psychologist ask such a leading, biased, and predictable question: “Were you comfortable there?” Perhaps “tell me more about the room,” or “Tell me how you felt about being there” would allow the reader to hear Choirboy’s feelings–not the psychologist’s feelings. Your later questions are “open,” and allow Choirboy to reveal his thoughts and feelings.
You have evoked my curiosity about the characters, and a cloud of mystery hangs over me. Looking forward to the unraveling process.
I have read chapters one and two. My initial comments regards both chapters. However, my comment about the psychologist’s leading question to Choirboy about the “damp” room is probably more relevant to chapter 2.
I am getting interested in 1051. The interview with the psychologist’s comments is whetting my curiosity about his dilemma and what it is he has forgotten.
I’ve now read the second chapter, and I have to say that it sounds like the author. I can hear Jim actually speaking these lines and to me it makes it more believable. It follows the writing principle that the author writes the story as if writing a letter to a close friend. It’s become very compelling.
